Reloved Magazine Feature

It’s always a fun day when you see one of your projects in a Reloved Magazine Feature.

Reloved magazine

Recently I discovered a fabulous new magazine dedicated to upcycling.  It’s called Reloved, and not only is it filled with great ideas, but the magazine design is amazing.

Reloved

This magazine is printed in the UK, so it’s currently only found at select retailers.  However, I found my copy at Barnes & Noble, and the digital copy is available for purchase. My painted headboard was featured in their May issues (which is actually on newsstands here in the US now – we see the magazine later here in the states.)  It’s so fun to have a project featured in print, and Reloved did a beautiful job with the headboard tutorial.

Reloved Magazine May Issue

I opened the magazine (page 68) and seriously wanted to scream.  It’s so fun to see a project in print!

Reloved Magazine Feature

I just can’t say enough good things about this magazine.  Check out how they’ve broken down my tutorial.  They list the supplies and steps while keeping a clean and beautiful design layout. Reloved Magazine Feature*

Here’s a closer look at the tutorial page.  The entire magazine is filled with tutorials and ideas and amazing design!

Reloved Mag

Reloved comes out monthly, and it’s definitely a magazine worth checking out – especially if you like to repurpose!

Favorite IKEA Finds

Favorite Ikea Finds

Last week, I spent the day at IKEA with a friend.  The nearest IKEA is two hours away, so it’s a pretty big deal to go.  (Like you can’t sleep the night before because you’re so excited big deal.) Although I found many more steals, I’m sharing my four favorite finds from our IKEA shopping trip.  The great thing about these items is that they work well in most decor situations/styles AND they are affordable!

RANARP WORK LAMP

1. RANARP LAMP I bought the floor version of this lamp, and I am IN LOVE.  As if the white and gold combo isn’t enough, it has a black & white cord.

I really could stare at this lamp all day.  It’s just so pretty.

Socker Greenhouse

2. SOCKER GREENHOUSE I have been admiring much more expensive versions of this greenhouse, and at $20, it’s a steal!

Plants in Ikea Greenhouse

Ikea White Greenhouse

I bought two fake plants from IKEA and the middle plant is a real aloe plant.

Rens Sheepskin

3. RENS SHEEPSKIN I keep buying these sheepskins because I keep finding that every room needs one!  They add a little texture and a little glam to your space.

You can throw these over the back of a chair or lay across a bench.  The options are endless!

Eivor Throw

4. EIVOR THROW IKEA has sold this throw for a while, but there’s a reason it’s so well-loved.  Who doesn’t love the black and white combo?  I have it in our playroom, but it really could work anywhere!

Ikea Blanket

Striped Ikea Blanket

This throw is sophisticated while still being fun. Ranging from $20 – $60, these items are an affordable way to add style and fun to your home.  If you don’t have an IKEA nearby, IKEA sells many items online.

* I was not sponsored by IKEA for this post.  I really just love a good deal (or four), and I just had to share these!

Photography Tips

Today I’m sharing Photography Tips and how to cheat with the auto setting to look like you know what you’re doing!

Photography Tips for shooting in auto

Recently I was asked to share my photography tips with other DIY bloggers.  (To see that post, you can click HERE.)  Besides being incredibly honored, I was also incredibly embarrassed.  I would have to admit that I use AUTO when I take pictures.  Obviously, someone who shoots in auto is not a professional. However, the more I thought about it, the more I decided that I didn’t need to hang my head in shame.  Instead, I’m embracing auto and sharing how you can cheat and get beautiful photos.  Now, if you have the ability and brains to shoot in manual, I applaud you.  I took a photography class for an entire semester in college, and yet I still went right back to shooting in auto after that class.

Years later when I began blogging, I took a photography course from an amazing photographer.  I was determined to say goodbye to auto.  Unfortunately, I continued shooting in auto.  All those F-stops and shutter speeds make my head hurt.  I’m just not wired to shoot manually. So, I realize there are much better ways to take beautiful photos.  However, if you’re like me and have the inability to shoot manually, then continue reading on!  Let’s embrace our inadequacy and make the best of it! So if you’re a manual mode idiot like me, I am going to share a few tips for shooting in auto as professionally as you can!

Here are my, “if you’re going to shoot in auto, here’s what you need to do for professional-looking photos” tips:

Photography 6 Tips

First off, a nice DSLR camera is important if you’re a blogger. I use a Nikon D3100 for all my photos, so it’s not crazy nice, but it’s a lot nicer than using my phone camera. Also, I have the option to change out lenses, and I did splurge for a telephoto lens. This lens is amazing. Since I’m shooting in auto, it’s how I get that beautifully blurred background that professionals achieve by adjusting F-stops in manual mode. This photo was taken in my home with my telephoto lens. I was able to easily focus on the mason jar planter, and the background was blurred. This was shot in auto mode with no flash.

Planting in Mason Jars

Speaking of not using a flash, that is my second tip for good photos. Turn OFF that flash! I also try to not use lamps or lights in the room when I take photos. Use only natural light whenever possible. To make this happen, I often have to plan my tutorials so I’m working on them while it’s still light out.  Most of my smaller craft tutorials are completed at my kitchen table since there are two walls of windows nearby.  Also, winter is SO hard for me with photoshoots.  I live in Indiana, and we can go days without seeing the sun in the colder months.  I remember last year I had to wait a week to shoot my Christmas home tour because it was just too dark in my house without the sunshine. There’s no controlling the weather, so the key is to be patient and intentional – finding natural light will be worth it.  Finally, if you can’t find a good space inside, don’t be afraid to take your work outside!

Southern Living Plants*

My third tip is to always consider your background. When I’m shooting a small project, my little secret is to set my objects on wrapping paper. Sometimes I prefer plain white paper and other times I want a bold pattern.  Regardless, I’m always on the lookout for fun wrapping paper.

Coral Annie Sloan Chalk Paint

Creative Jar Pin

Another tip is to take lots of photos and from lots of angles and distances – it makes it really interesting!

FeltFlowerGardland12

FeltFlowerGardland13

FeltFlowerGardland11

Do not forget to edit your photos. Cropping and brightening photos can make good photos amazing photos. I use Photoshop to edit my photos, but there are lots of other great photo editing software available. I crop my photos to make them interesting, and I almost always lighten/brighten photos.

Subway Tile in Kitchen*

Finally, don’t be afraid to call in an expert if needed. I’ve had several times where I called in a photographer friend. Once I was doing a post on mascara. I couldn’t figure out how to take a good pic of myself, so I called in a photographer friend for help. This is the photo taken by my daughter (notice my wrapping paper background):

L's Pic

And the shot taken by my photographer friend (using my camera).

Decorate your eyes

Two final thoughts: I consistently size all my photos at 550 pixels (this is the size of photos that best work on my theme) – horizontal and vertical.  Your theme could drive you to pick a different size, the point is to stay consistent.  I also always try to have a great vertical shot for each post.  Vertical shots are a must for Pinterest! You’ll be amazed at how much beautiful photography can help with the success of your blog.  Use these tips and keep practicing – that’s what I’m doing!  Maybe someday, I’ll shut off auto.  But until then, I’ll work hard to make my auto photos as beautiful as possible!

Decorating Tips for Renters

Just because you’re renting doesn’t mean you can’t decorate!  Check out these decorating tips for renters and you will feel at home in no time.

Decorating Tips for Renters

We visited my sister last week, and I’m so glad I brought my camera with me.  Since they live a few hours away, I don’t see her house much.  However, I always love what I see when I visit! Despite temporarily living in a rental, Heather makes the home theirs.

Inspired by all she has done, I came up with a list of five inexpensive decorating tips for renters – which actually apply to homeowners as well!

1. Decorate with plants.   They are inexpensive, add life and color, and can easily be moved.

Renter Decor Ideas

You can trim some plants and use the greenery in a vase for a pretty centerpiece.  (And those candlesticks were plain white, but my sister added washi tape to make the stripes!)   Also, Heather added concrete to her tabletop!  To see more, click HERE.

2. Add window treatments.   This is an easy way to make your rental seem homier.  You can find inexpensive window treatments or make your own from bedsheets.

Heather painted the black bands on these window treatments using fabric paint.

And she added ribbon to make these shades a little more exciting.

3. Add lamps.   Not only are they pretty, but lamps add extra light throughout your home – adding to the ambiance.

Heather added ribbon trim to most of her lampshades.

Decorating Ideas for Renters

Wall lamps are a great solution for renters.  They look permanents but are easily removed.

Wall Lamp Outdoor Chandelier

Don’t forget about your outside space – if you have one.  My sister added garden lights and a free chandelier she updated with paint.

4. Hang temporary shelving.   It’s a great way to display dishes, frames, and fun accent pieces.

I’m in love with these shelves.

5. Decorate with gallery walls. Hang pretty art, family photos, memorabilia – anything that makes the space yours.

Summer Home Tour

Summer Hoe Tour

Hi guys!  I am so excited to welcome summer – it’s by far my favorite season.  Bring on the sunshine and spray paint weather! The boys have only been out of school a few weeks, but already our summer break has been crazy busy.  Obviously having my kids home really slows down my DIY projects.  And now that they’re getting older, they are involved in so many things.  I am officially a taxi cab mom and spend WAY too much time in the car.  Just this week we cut back on a lot of our activities.  I want my kids to have a real summer and have time to watch the clouds go by and catch fireflies.  Up until now, they haven’t been home long enough to even experience boredom.  I’m determined to have them experience a real summer!  All that being said, I have some DIY projects in the works, but until then, I thought it would be fun to welcome in summer with a home tour.

Welcome!

Front Door

When you walk into our home, there’s a small entryway with the office on your right and the dining room on your left.  I took over the office, so I was able to make it a little more fun than our last masculine-inspired office.

Office

The desk was left in the house, and it was an inexpensive laminate piece.  I painted it black, distressed it, and added new hardware.

Painted Desk

I really will paint anything – even my stapler.

Desk Misc

These bookshelves help fill the space for now.  Eventually, we want to add built-ins in this room.

Bookshelves

I created the large photo art piece using instagram photos, an old frame, and Mod Podge.

Office Corner

I use this dresser I chalk painted to store my art and craft supplies.

Painted Furniture

I fell in love with this sewing machine because it had our last name on it.

I love using found objects for decor.  This yellow radio was in my parent’s first home.

Decorating with old pieces

I love a formal dining room.  It makes dinner a special event.

Dining Room*

I spray-painted the chairs black and distressed them

I used chalk paint on the table.

My husband and I designed and installed the wall treatment in our dining room.

These plates were passed down several generations and I love having them decorate my walls.

When you walk through the entry, you enter our family room.  I stenciled the walls to add some interest to the neutral color scheme.

Rearranging Furniture

This is one of my favorite spaces because of all the light.

Family Room

I bought an old piano for $50 and painted it.

On the other side of the wall, my piano sits against is our kitchen.

The kitchen was very dark and the floors were in horrible shape.  I painted the cabinets with chalk paint.  I also painted the floor with a faux rug. Subway Tile Backsplash

I stenciled the wall that goes into the kitchen nook.

Mudroom-2

This shoe cubby that sits in my mudroom was one of my most exciting finds.  It was supposedly an old mail sorter in my town’s post office.

Mudroom-1

I added a fabric wall to our half bath and also created a wall treatment in the bathroom.

Easy Wall Treatment

I haven’t really decorated our master bedroom.  I hung curtains and used what we had to fill the space.  I’m planning a makeover in the near future!

As you go upstairs, we have a fairly large landing that I decided to have some fun with.

Pattern Wall with Frog Tape

I painted a swiss cross patterned wall on one wall and created a travel chalkboard/corkboard to hang as artwork.

The kids have a playroom upstairs.  (These aren’t all mine – just three of them are!)

Fabric Wallpaper Tutorial

Video Tutorial: Fabric Wallpaper

Video Tutorial: Fabric Wallpaper

Happy Friday! Today I am sharing a video tutorial for hanging fabric on a wall using liquid starch:

Starched fabric walls really look like wallpaper and are a great way to add some interest to your home! This tutorial is great for anyone with commitment issues and/or for renters.  It really is easy to remove and does not damage walls.  To see my original post which inspired this video tutorial, you can click HERE.

**UPDATE** I have used this wall treatment several times throughout our home with much success.  I have also removed the starched fabric, and it has left no damage to the wall.  It really is a great temporary solution to wallpaper!

Herringbone Painted Wall

Today I’m sharing a herringbone painted wall that is modern and fun, and it’s a great alternative to wallpaper.

Wall Reveal

My good friends, the Benton family, recently welcomed a new baby boy into their family.  When I went to visit the little guy, I fell in love with their guest room turned nursery.

Here’s the before:

Nursery Before

And the awesome after:

Nursery Reveal

They began by painting the accent wall in a white in Martha Stewart’s Popcorn.

Blank Wall

Next, they measured out horizontal stripes.

Creating a fun wall treatment

And then the taping craziness began.  They switched the direction, but they taped outlines within the vertical lines.  These were freehanded.

Frog Tape

Then, they painted the entire wall in HGTV’s Cloudburst blue.

Creating Nursery Wall Pattern

This is my favorite part…the tape removal!  They removed the taped and the amazing pattern was slowly revealed.

Wall Progress

And here’s the final wall!

Wall Reveal

I love it!  It’s fun and playful – perfect for a boy’s nursery!

Nursery After

Nursery Reveal

Here’s baby Benton, the cute little inhabitant of the adorable room. His mom tells me the patterned wall has provided hours of entertainment As an infant, baby Benton would be crying and would stop as he was being rocked, and he would stare at the wall.  (I can’t blame him – I’d do the same thing!)

Marshall in the nursery

There is a travel theme in the nursery.  You can see it in the art, maps, globe, and other fun decor.  Also, a lot of Baby Benton’s nursery is handmade.  The quilt was made by his great-grandmother and most of the women in the family helped with the stitching on it!! All of the books were gifts from baby showers and have personal notes in each. And all of the pendants were from different baby showers the ones on the curtain were handmade. Baby Benton’s father and grandfather made the changing pad holder.

A special thanks to my friends for letting us tour (and hijack!) Baby Benton’s room!

Where would you add a herringbone painted wall in your home?

Create a Patio Oasis

Create a Patio Oasis

I love the back of our home, but it is monochromatic and needed a little life.  By adding some beautiful foliage and fun to my patio with Southern Living Plants, I was able to create a patio oasis where I can relax (and hide from my kids). Southern Living Plants has a huge selection of beautiful and unique plants.  Since I live in a colder climate, I decided to create a container garden.  This way, I can move the plants inside during any unseasonably cold weather.  I brought the south to me, and when I’m sitting in my little oasis, I sometimes believe I’m an adopted southerner. Because the plants are so colorful, I used a black and white color scheme to emphasize their brilliance: a simple outdoor rug with a black border, white rockers, a white table, black containers, and black and white outdoor pillows.  Simple, elegant, and fun! Southern Living Plants Container Garden

In the larger pots, I surrounded the plants with Evercolor Everillow Carex.   It’s such a great filler and provides bright, colorful foliage.  This plant prefers full sun to part shade.

Sunshine Linustrum**

In one of the larger pots, I planted a Sunshine Ligustrum.  It’s an evergreen that likes full sun.

In the other large pot, I planted a really fun tropical-looking plant called a Poquito Banana.  This plant can grow to three feet high and loves full to part sun.

In the smaller pot on the ground, I grouped a Lemon Lime Nandina with the Puckered Up Colocasia. Both plants like full sun to part shade.  The Lemon Lime Nandina is an evergreen, and the Puckered Up Colocasia has chocolate-brown leaves.

And last but definitely not least, I planted a Solar Ray Sunbow Azalea.  This plant will have a brilliant yellow/orange colored flower and likes full sun to part shade.

I am so excited about my new patio landscaping.  I can sit on my rocking chairs, relax, and enjoy the beautiful bright plants. If you’re dreaming of the day you’ll create a patio oasis at your own home, I hope you found this post helpful.
