Paint

How to Paint a Faucet

Have you ever wondered if you can paint a faucet? Our house was built in the ’90s.  The ’90s = shiny brass.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have the budget to replace the faucets, so I decided it was worth a try to paint them…

I used Rust0leum’s Painter’s Touch Ultra Cover paint in Metallic oil rubbed bronze, and this bathroom project barely put a dent in the can.

To begin, you will want to prep your faucet and/or fixtures. Make sure to clean the surface you will paint and rub it down with steel wool or 220-grit sandpaper.  The steel wool and/or sandpaper will roughen the surface so the paint has something to stick to.

I realized after I had started to tape off my faucet that I didn’t have a primer. I was too excited to stop my project and run and get a top coat. Now, although I strongly recommend that you use a coat of primer, I didn’t. I will be the guinea pig for this little experiment, and we’ll see how the faucet holds up without a primer.

I figure it’s a win-win situation. If it holds up – great! I now have an oil bronze faucet instead of a brass faucet. If it doesn’t, I guess I will “have” to buy a new faucet for the sink. I know which scenario my husband is rooting for…

Now, it would have been SO much easier to spray paint the faucet (Rust-Oleum also offers the same product in spray paint as well as a spray primer), but I did not want to have to remove the faucet. So, I taped it off with painters tape and got to work.

The key to oil-based paint (canned and spray paint) is to avoid heavy coats. Too much paint will drip and take forever to dry. Also, make sure the first coat is dry before adding the second coat of paint.

faucet.4

It took around three light coats of paint and the drying process was VERY long. I painted the faucet and drain over a course of 2-3 days. I also had to pull out q-tips to paint some of the hard-to-reach crevices.

You can add a clear topcoat, but I opted not to.

sink.5

I haven’t had much experience using oil-based paint, and it is a pain! It is SO hard to clean off anything – your hands, brushes, the sink. I went through a lot of mineral spirits.

When I pulled off the tape, the paint had seeped through some areas of the tape – especially at the base of the handles. I actually used the chiseled end of a wooden kabob stick to scrape the extra paint off (but a razor blade would work as well).

Overall, I think the project went okay.  I’m not sure how it will hold up, but I do like the way it looks! It was MUCH more time-consuming than I had expected, but I know a can of paint and time is MUCH cheaper than a new bathroom faucet.

Painted Faucet

I’ll keep you posted on how it looks in a few months and may attempt painting our other brass bathroom faucets.

UPDATE:

In my experience, painting bathroom fixtures is a temporary fix.  If you’re looking for a less expensive solution to switching out the faucet, this is a great way to buy some time until you’re ready.

Flower Pot Tips

I found a few inexpensive flower pot tips on Pinterest and decided to test them out…

Trash cans as flower pots.

If you find inexpensive trash cans, they can make fantastic flower pots. This is a great option for those who enjoy vegetable and/or herb container gardening because flower pots and planters can get pricey.

The Spotted Lamb

You can read more about this project at The Spotted Lamb.

I wanted to give this trash can flower pot thing a try, so I found a $3 black round trash can at Dollar General.  It is not the most beautiful flower pot, but it is a great container for $3 (don’t forget to drill a few holes in the bottom of your trash can for drainage)!

PinterestFlowerTips2

Flower containers can be used for pot filler and help with drainage.

I filled the bottom of the container with rocks and gravel and used another Pinterest tip.

it'sAgreenLIFE

I found this photo on Pinterest, but unfortunately, it doesn’t link up to a specific blog post.

To help with drainage and to fill space (so you don’t waste potting soil), use the disposable flower containers that came with your flowers as filler. They will help with excess water, and are especially useful for indoor pots which don’t have drainage holes, and it keeps your planted pot lightweight while helping prevent root rot.

gardening

Use Diapers to keep hanging baskets moist.

The last tip I tried was adding diapers to hanging baskets.

diaperinpot

Unfortunately, the picture I found on Pinterest didn’t link up to anything – not even a blog.

However,  I decided to give it a try since I’ve accidentally washed a diaper or two (or lots) and know HOW MUCH water those things can hold.

PinterestFlowerTips4

Hopefully, I will be watering my hanging baskets a lot less this summer since they should retain moisture longer. This tip should be especially helpful for those full sun annuals.

PinterestFlowerTips3

Don’t forget to add fertilizer/nutrients and use potting mix instead of garden soil in your plant containers, and you’ll have a patio, porch, and/or deck full of beautiful potted plants.

Best Smart Lighting System

I love having a smart home. I have tested various smart lighting systems over the years, and Caséta by Lutron is BY FAR the best smart lighting system.

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Lutron. All opinions are 100% mine. Thank you for supporting the brands that allow me to create unique content while featuring products I love!

To add the Caséta by Lutron Wireless lighting system to your home, the smart home lighting kit is needed. The kit provides everything needed for smart lighting control: a Smart Bridge, a dimmer, and a Pico Smart Remote.

Once the lighting system is ready, there are several ways you can control your lights:

Switch

The lights can be controlled at the switch (which means anyone can control the lights). Installing the dimmer (light switch) does require wiring a light switch, but Lutron offers plenty of online instructions and videos if you need help.

App

You can control your lights from anywhere using the Lutron app which makes setup simple and is easy to use. The App allows for complete control of your lights as well as the ability to set scenes and schedules.

Pico Smart Remote

The Pico Smart Remote is another way to control lighting. I love keeping one on my nightstand so I can control the lights without having to get out of bed.

Smart Devices

Caséta by Lutron Wireless lighting system can be connected to smart devices. I have our lighting downstairs paired to our Google home while my boys use Alexa to controls their lights upstairs.

There are so many great features in this lighting system, but one of my personal favorites is the smart plugs. I use the plugs to make my lamps smart, and now I can now easily control my dining room lamps.

Best Smart Light System

Caséta works with more smart products than any other smart lighting brand. That means you can smarten up your home one room at a time and easily manage all your devices as you expand.

If you are considering smart lighting and want a well-lit home, you definitely need to check out Caséta by Lutron.

Best Rug Sources

I love decorating our home with rugs. They add texture, pattern and color, and today I am sharing my personal favorites for some of the best rug sources.

Safavieh

This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

Safavieh is a vendor, so you can’t buy directly from them (see more on other Safavieh products I use in our home HERE). However, if you type their name while searching Amazon, you’ll find a huge assortment of gorgeous rugs like this vintage-inspired raspberry rug in our dining room.

Ruggable

Ruggable creates washable rugs, and they are AMAZING. I have them scattered throughout our home, and you can peel away the top layer and throw it in your washing machine. I’ve washed mine several times, and I couldn’t be more impressed.

I have a Ruggable runner in our kitchen, and it comes in several colors. I also have a Ruggable runner in our mudroom, and it hides everything we track in (and washes well, too)!

Here are a few more photos of my kitchen rug, and the first photo shows how easy it is to peel away the top layer while the second photo shows me putting it in the washer.

I also have a ruggable in our laundry room – it’s obvious how much I love them!

BoutiqueRugs

BoutiqueRugs offers a huge online selection with fantastic prices. There is always a sale, and the elegant blue rug in my office (the photo above is older from when it was our piano/library room) has held up well.

RugsUSA

Like BoutiqueRugs, RugsUSA is an online source for rugs. They offer a HUGE selection at great prices, and I am asked all the time about this gorgeous colorful rug in our living room.

Revival

If you are in the market for vintage rugs, then Revival is a must. It’s an online source that offers a large selection of one-of-a-kind vintage rugs, and they come to you already cleaned. I have a vintage rug in our bathroom and kitchen nook, and you can see more on those rugs and Revival HERE.

Do you have a favorite source for rugs? Let me know in the comments!

Granny Chic

Have you heard of the Granny Chic or Grandmillenial term which has recently popped up in the design world? There seems to be a modern revival of what you would typically find in your grandparents’ homes mixed with modern pieces. Because of the amount of time spent in our homes, 2020 saw a rise in nostalgia in interior design as we look for ways to make our homes cozier and more comforting and Granny Chic is now a thing.

My home may not be the perfect example of this trend, but I do tend to gravitate towards all the things that define Granny Chic:

Granny Chic Decor Trend
This chandelier once hung in my grandparent’s home in Iowa, and it adds so much charm to our home.

Granny Chic

The stark gray and white interiors which were so popular this past decade are slowly being warmed up with saturated color. Continuing with the Granny Chic design trend, textiles and draperies are making their way back into spaces. The pattern on pattern trend is a fun way to tell a unique story in your home while lifting our moods and spirits.

Don’t be afraid of wallpaper! This paper is temporary wallpaper and so easy to remove.

My personal favorite Granny chic trend is the rise in florals in design. I’ve always been a fan of florals – flowers have a long-term positive effect on moods. It just makes sense to bring flowers’ colorful, happy vibe into our homes. The new florals have a more modern approach than those we remember in our grandparents’ homes.

The floral art over the fireplace is available here on my site.

If you’re looking to add florals to your home, you must check out my floral art collection. I share all the details of that collection, and you can see more on that HERE.

Living Room Decor

Our living room is one of my favorite spaces in our home. It’s elegant AND liveable. I am often asked about the sources, so I decided to create a post sourcing all the living room decor.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find an exact match for everything, but I did find VERY similar pieces. I hope you can use these pieces to create your own pretty space.

Our living room is painted in Valspar’s Night View. It’s a deep navy that is often mistaken for black online. However, in person it looks more navy – it is very deep in color, but it is definitely not black.

This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. Click here to read my full disclosure policy.

These gold wall lamps are plug-ins and come in pairs. You can purchase them here. If you’re wondering how I hid the cords, I talk all about that in this post.

These tapered candles are very realistic and come with a remote control. I love having the control to set the candles on timers and not have to worry. You can purchase them here.

This floral art is called the “Lena” after my daughter. It’s even more stunning in person, and you can purchase your own (framed or unframed) here on my site.

These velvet club chairs come as a pair for a great price. There are several color options, and I love them because they don’t take up much space. You can purchase them here.

I love this head planter because it is such a fun and unique way to showcase your indoor greenery. You can purchase your own here for a great price.

Unfortunately, the exact ottoman I have is no longer available, but this brand is similar in look and offers several different colors. You can purchase a velvet ottoman here.

This rug is BY FAR the most asked about decor item. I love how colorful it is while still being elegant, AND it has a fantastic price tag. You can purchase your own rug here.

This round mirror is a staple for any room and any decor style. It helps bounce light around and makes a pretty statement. You can purchase your own round mirror here.

I use these velvet pillow covers all over our home. They come in so many colors, and they are incredibly affordable. Purchase velvet pillow covers here.

My exact sofas are no longer available, but I did find a close option with a great price. You can purchase a similar mid-century sofa here.

I hope this roundup was helpful for you. Please tag me or email me if you end up creating a space that was inspired by mine.

Custom Roman Shades

If you are looking for custom roman shades, I have the best source for them. ByHarrington.com is a small business in Alabama where they create the most gorgeous handmade roman shades.

This room is Steve’s office, and he often watches TV here in the evenings. The home next to us burned four years ago and sat vacant until earlier this year when a new family renovated it and moved in. We realized we would have to add window treatments to this room and coincidentally, Dianne from By Harrington reached out and gifted us with these gorgeous roman shades.

I selected the Roman Shade #116 with Banding. It’s mounted inside the window with tucks, and the shade are Cotton Duck Navy with White Webbing Banding.

By Harrington has been in business for forty years, and they have a huge selection of options – everything from greek key to linen to tied ribbon. The craftsmanship is just perfect.

We went with the dimout fabric (dims some light), and it was the perfect solution for the space. It allows some light in during the day, but it also provides privacy. And, the shades still look beautiful even down.

By Harrington offer lift systems, child safety, and even cord lock systems, but we just chose the traditional cord pull and wrap it around the provided clear hooks.

Installation was easy, and all the hardware for hanging was included.

I can’t imagine a more perfect window treatment for the space!

If you have questions, Dianne of By Harrington is so helpful and knowledgeable.

These custom roman shades are timeless and perfectly customized for this room.

By Harrington is also on Etsy, where you can read all of their fantastic product reviews.

Which roman shades would you select for your home?

I love supporting other small businesses, and please consider ByHarrington.com if you’re in the market for custom roman shades!

Elegant Floral Art

I am thrilled to finally share my first-ever product launch with you all. It has been a dream of mine for several years, and the end result is even more beautiful than I even imagined. I created eight gorgeous elegant floral art pieces in collaboration with the most creative small business owners: Melody of Carpenter Photo and Audi of Vineyard Flower Co.

Mel and Audi were a dream to work with, and I am overjoyed with how the product turned out.

You can find the floral photo art at www.ElegantFloralArt.com, and all prints come mounted on 3mm black styrene, without a watermark, and are meant to be framed without glass. You can purchase the art in several different sizes (8×10, 11×14, 16×20, 24×36, and 30×40) – with or without a frame. I’m offering free shipping on all orders (and we’re only currently shipping in the USA).

The photography shoot was at Mel’s studio which was perfect. It has fantastic lighting and great character (it was an old boarding house).

Audi created the most perfect floral arrangements, and I love that we were able to preserve the floral’s beauty forever with this artwork.

I created a mood board with four different arrangement ideas and sent it on to Audi:

Audi took my mood board and made my vision come to life beautifully.

Mel shoots for my blog often, and is not only one of my dearest friends but one of my favorite creators. She’s incredibly talented, and I loved partnering with her on this project. I just sat back and watched Mel work her magic.

And now, I’m excited to proudly introduce you to these gorgeous ladies:

How to Clean Glass Showers

I am asked all the time how I keep our bathroom shower glass clean, and today I’m sharing how to clean glass showers and shower doors.

This is the same method I use for cleaning windows, and it really does work well. I quit trying other methods because this is the best option (other than hiring it out)!

To begin, you will need some supplies.

Please don’t be overwhelmed – it really is a quick process!

Supplies needed to clean glass showers:

  • Bowl or Bucket
  • Microfiber Cloth
  • Distilled White Vinegar
  • Sprayway Glass Cleaner
  • Squeegee
  • Paper Towels

How to Clean Glass Showers:

Mix warm water with white distilled vinegar.

Mix the water and distilled white vinegar with a 1:1 ratio in either a bowl or bucket. I prefer to use very warm water.

Using the microfiber cloth, wipe down the window with the water and vinegar mixture.

You may need to do this step twice to remove some of the stubborn deposits.

Squeegee the water and vinegar mixture off the window.

Start at the top of the window and come down with the squeegee.

Wipe down the window with glass cleaner and a paper towel.

I like to use Sprayway glass cleaner – it is my favorite glass cleaner and was recommended by the glass company who installed our shower.

And that is how you can sparkly clean glass showers and windows!

Once you get into the groove of the process, it goes really fast. And, the vinegar and water combo also works well to clean the shower.

Best Flooring for Rooms

We have a variety of flooring in our home – everything from hardwoods to luxury vinyl planks to tile to carpet. After testing out so many types of flooring, I thought it would be helpful for me to share the best flooring for rooms in your home.

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of STAINMASTER®. All opinions are 100% mine.

There are four obvious choices when it comes to selecting flooring for every room in your home:

  • Carpet
  • Vinyl (I’ll be discussing LVP luxury vinyl planks)
  • Wood
  • Tile

Best Flooring For Rooms:

Mudroom and Entryways

Best Flooring for Every Room

The mudroom and entryway are spaces that see lots of use and constant tracking in of the outside elements.

We had white tile in our mudroom, and it showed EVERY SINGLE piece of dirt. It drove me mad.

Last year, we replaced our tile with LVP. Luxury Vinyl Planks are durable and will hold up to high traffic and muddy shoes.

We selected STAINMASTER® luxury vinyl (Phenix natural) which provides the look of beautifully realistic wood, plus STAINMASTER® durability and easy maintenance.

Laundry Rooms

Best Flooring For Every Room

Laundry rooms are a space where you have to consider moisture and water. Tile and LVP are great choices, but with all the standing, luxury vinyl planks are less harsh to stand on. We have it in our laundry room and love the aesthetics and durability.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are another space where water and moisture must be taken into consideration. I have porcelain tile in several bathrooms but be careful because it can be slippery and cold (you can have heating coils installed if you want to warm up the floors).

Luxury Vinyl Plank is waterproof, and you can lay them in unique patterns which is perfect for a bathroom. We have LVP in two of our bathrooms, and it is so easy to maintain.

Dining Rooms, Living Rooms, and Family Rooms

Often, the dining room, living room (or family room) are connected, so continuity is important and should be considered.

Hardwood is a common flooring seen in these living spaces but keep in mind that kids toys, furniture feet, and pets claws can scratch wood flooring. However, hardwood is warm and inviting.

Carpet makes for a comfortable space – especially if you like to stretch out on the floor in front of the TV. Also, if your living space (like a bonus room) is on the second floor, carpet will help muffle sound.

We selected STAINMASTER® carpet for our home:

  • Upstairs Carpet: Power Point in White Dove
  • Stairway Carpet: Bora Bora in Harbor Lights
  • Master Bedroom: Braided Opulence in Flannel

Luxury Vinyl Plank is great if you love the look of wood but want something more durable. To make LVP cozier in these living spaces, add a couple of area rugs (many STAINMASTER® styles can be made into area rugs).

Bedrooms

The key to flooring in a bedroom is warmth, comfort and style.

There’s no denying that wood flooring and Luxury Vinyl Planks are aesthetically pretty in a bedroom, carpet just reigns for a reason. Bedrooms are meant to be comfortable, and carpet provides comfort that no other flooring can.

We went with a lighter carpet to brighten up our space, and we can rest easy knowing all STAINMASTER® carpets include a *lifetime warranty on stain, soil, static shock and pet urine.

*Please review your retailer’s STAINMASTER® limited lifetime warranty for more details.

Basement

Carpet makes a space like a basement cozier and is good for all the traffic, wear and tear basements (and the stairs leading down to the basement) see from a family.

Luxury Vinyl Plank is a fantastic solution for basements both for its water resistance (basements have high humidity since they are below ground level) and durability.

And last, but not least….the heart of the home.

Kitchen

The kitchen is one of the hardest working spaces in the house, and it seeing lots of spills and heavy usage.

Porcelain tile is always a good choice for durability, but it is cold and hard. My in-laws had tile in their kitchen and ended up replacing it because it hurt her back to stand on it – and standing is a must in a kitchen as you prepare meals.

We have hardwood flooring in our kitchen, and although beautiful, it hasn’t held up well. We paid to have them refinished soon after moving in, and we have floorboards that have major water damage (I overflowed my kitchen sink not once but TWICE). Also, the kids have dented the floor with the counter stools.

If I had the choice, I would have Luxury Vinyl Planks in the kitchen. It provides the warm, inviting look of wood without the maintenance issues

Best Flooring For Every Room

We have everything from carpet to LVP to hardwood to tile in our home, so I can honestly say that there is a place for each of these types of flooring as well and pros and cons for each.

Being new to our LVP (almost a year in), we have been incredibly pleased. For me, aesthetics are incredibly important, and LVP has come a long way in creating realistic graphics on the flooring surface. They also have texture options that feel like the grain of the wood, and it’s incredibly thick and durable (and very resistant to scratching).

I hope I’ve helped you decide on the best flooring for every room in your home! Are you looking for shopping or selection help with flooring? GO HERE for tips.

Home Decor Finds

Best Home Decor Source

This post is a sponsored post by Tuesday Morning. I take pride in reviewing only products that fit my brand and will be beneficial to my readers. And while this post is sponsored, all the opinions are my own.

I am often asked about my favorite source for home décor finds, and Tuesday Morning ranks up there for me with its great deals (20-60% less than department stores) and high-quality brand-name items.

Home Decor Finds

My goal in our home is to make it look high-end without spending a fortune which is why I DIY and shop stores like Tuesday Morning.

We have used the same dishes forever, and I wanted a change and something more special for us. AND, I am very hopeful that we may begin entertaining again after the year we all had. I’m so ready to create pretty tablescapes (which is always a great distraction when I host because I’m not known for my culinary abilities).

Best Home Decor Finds

I went to Tuesday Morning and had the best time treasure hunting for our kitchen. They have gorgeous, high-quality products, and I fell in love with these blue and white dishes the moment I saw them.

Best Home Decor Source

I then saw an ENTIRE selection devoted to the most gorgeous melamine dishes, and knew I had to add these as well. Besides obviously being great for kids, these dishes are amazing for eating on the patio – when the weather warms up.

I spent an hour in the two long aisles filled with kitchen goodness. The product was well stocked, and they had so many unique pieces – everything from pots and pans to stemware and linens.

I came home with my goodies and decided to set up a brunch on our kitchen island using my finds (while bragging to Steve about how much I saved by buying it all)!

My Tuesday Morning finds transformed our kitchen island. I felt like I was transformed into some fancy little cafe.

Serving Tray

A melamine serving tray is a must, and this one I found looks like it’s anything but plastic. However, it’s perfect for a fancy meal to an outside barbecue.

Placemats

I love the woven placemats, and the pack came with enough to use around our dining room table, too.

Baking Dishes

I baked a lemon loaf in my new gorgeous bread pan. I never have had one pretty enough to take it straight from the oven to the table.

Bowls

This simple but elegant bowl can be used to serve mashed potatoes or hold a gorgeous bouquet of flowers.

Cutting Boards

One thing you can never have too many of – cutting boards! Tuesday Morning had a huge selection of unique boards in various shapes and sizes. I love to prop them up in our kitchen for decor.

Dishes

I mentioned the dishes earlier, but they’re so pretty they deserve a second shout out. You would never know the darker blue dishes are plastic!

Tuesday Morning helped me transform my boring kitchen island into a magical, beautiful space.

I created a very luxurious high-end tablescape (or should I say islandscape) without spending a fortune!

I’d love to know – what’s your favorite Tuesday Morning find?

Best Source for Vintage Rugs

I have always wanted to own a vintage rug, and now I own not one – but two! But first, I have to share the best source for Vintage Rugs.

Best Source for Vintage Rugs

Revival is an online shop that provides beautiful and affordable vintage rugs, and you can save 10% off your order using the code SINCERELYSARAD10.

This post is a sponsored post by Revival. I take pride in reviewing only products that fit my brand and will be beneficial to my readers. And while this post is sponsored, all the opinions are my own.

I have been so impressed with Revival from the beginning to the end. The shopping experience is great (clear images and honest descriptions) and the receiving experience is even better. The rugs arrived neatly folded, CLEANED, and with classy packaging (and a bonus tote).

I ordered a 2’x10′ Turkish rug for our bathroom, and I never knew I could love a rug SO much. It is the perfect addition to the space.

It adds a gorgeous pop of color without being overwhelming, AND my doors don’t get caught on the rug – something that has always happened with rugs in the past.

I used rug tape to hold it in place, and I just can’t help but smile everytime I walk into the bathroom.

The gorgeous Revival vintage rug is like my own personal red (more pink) carpet!

I also selected a Revival vintage rug for our kitchen nook, and it is a 6’x9′ Persian rug.

I also used rug tape to keep it in place (I have three kids), and it looks amazing in both the nook and flows seamlessly into our kitchen and living room.

My first experience in owning vintage rugs has been an amazing one, and I love feeling like I’ve added works of art to our floor. Both rugs are stunning and have incredible quality. The colors are vibrant without being too overpowering and have a timeless feel to them – something I love to strive towards.

Go check out Revival and their amazing vintage rug selection HERE, and use code SINCERELYSARAD10 for 10% off your order!
